The sun goes down behind a line of trees, under a long band of cloud.
Mist lies on a still river at dawn, dead snags and gum trees reflected under pink cloud. Two Pink Cockatoos with crests raised sit side by side on a pale gum branch. A shaded verandah table set with a jug of lemon water, glasses and a tall vase of flowers, green lawn beyond. Bathers in sun hats in a curving soaking pool on the riverbank, gums and blue sky above. Two guests share a drink on a sandstone block beside the Warrego River in warm late-afternoon light. The sun sinks into a line of trees beyond a farm dam, the orange sky mirrored in still water. Guests raise their glasses along a long table on the hotel lawn at dusk, festoon lights strung through the trees overhead. The Milky Way across a dark outback sky.

A different way to keep time

Up early for birds, walks and gardens. Under cover through the heat. Back outside when the light softens.

At Club Boutique Hotel Cunnamulla, summer has its own rhythm. Give the verandah, the Day Spa and the dinner table their share of the day.

Morning

Pink and violet cloud at sunrise over a plain of grass and scattered trees.

Sunrise

BreatheWake, coffee, breakfast

Start the day before the heat does. The first hour is the quiet one, and it belongs to whoever is up for it.

Tea and coffee facilities in every room, so the first cuppa is yours to make.

Peieta is a fifth-generation local. In 2011 she bought the run-down hotel as a home base for her tour business, Out the Back Australia.

Read Peieta’s words from the film

“G’day, this is Peieta Mills from Club Boutique Hotel, Cunnamulla, and I know spots out here that aren’t on any map, and where you can see 40 different species before breakfast.”

On screen: Just out of Cunnamulla. Red earth, big sky. All of this, a short drive from your room. Stay a while.

Midday

The hotel verandah in the middle of the day: white chairs and high tables in deep shade under ceiling fans, the garden bright beyond.

The middle of the day is not for doing. Everything else can wait for the light to soften.

The town pool is a two-minute walk, with guest entry covered by the hotel. Summer lunches are served at the hotel, and the suites are air-conditioned.
