Access to Private Properties Never Open to the Public

You’ll explore multi-generational sheep and cattle stations with permanent waterholes, nesting hollows, and undisturbed mulga woodlands. These properties have hosted the same grazing families for over 100 years and remain closed to general visitors but rich in birdlife and nature.

Why private properties matter in summer:

Birds must drink regularly in extreme heat, making waterholes critical viewing locations. Riverine vegetation provides shelter, concentrating species in favourable microclimates. Many local properties have been in the same family for over 100 years and the owners are out and about on the property most days of the year and see what birds are around. Places like Bowra Sanctuary are often closed restricting access however many places in the region offer spectacular bird viewing and as locals we can take you there with year round access.

Explore Two Globally Significant Wetlands

Currawinya National Park

– 228+ recorded bird species, with internationally important wetlands at Lakes Numalla and Wyara attracting over 100,000 waterbirds during peak conditions

Lake Bindegolly National Park

– unique freshwater–saline lake system supporting 180+ recorded species.

Your guide shares intimate knowledge of outback habitats, regional ecosystems, native plant uses, and sustainable land management practices passed down through generations. They also know all the locals and how to get access for exclusive birdwatching opportunities year round.

The Story Behind the Tour
Summer:
When Threatened Species Reveal Themselves
Most birding tours avoid outback Queensland in summer. But January to March is peak breeding and post-breeding season for the region’s most vulnerable species.

The Australian Painted-snipe, one of Australia’s rarest birds, is only detectable during its October–March breeding window. Painted Honeyeaters follow mistletoe flowering cycles, making them far more visible during summer breeding. Pink Cockatoos extend their breeding into January, giving you rare photo opportunities of adults with juveniles.

Why Dawn and Dusk Matter
Summer temperatures soar, but your guide schedules birding during the optimal 2–3 hour windows after dawn and before dusk. Birds feed intensively during these cooler periods before temperatures peak.

Midday strategy: While most birds shelter from 10am–4pm, patient observers stationed at waterholes still see numerous species coming to drink. Your guide knows every reliable water source.

Six Distinct Ecosystems in One Tour
You’ll cross Mulga Lands, Sandhills, Gidgee Stands, Mitchell Grass Plains, Brigalow Country, and Wetlands, each supporting unique bird communities.

Kookaburra Birding Tour Cunnamulla

Ephemeral wetlands filled by early-year flooding rains attract spectacular waterbird congregations. Shaded riverine vegetation concentrates species seeking relief from heat.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is summer too hot for birdwatching?
Summer is actually peak season for the outlined threatened species sightings. In the heat of summer birds typically stay close to water. Your guide schedules birding during the optimal dawn and dusk windows when birds are most active. Midday sessions focus on waterholes where birds must drink despite the heat.

What if I’m not an experienced birder?
This tour welcomes passionate birders at all levels. Your expert guide tailors the experience to your knowledge and provides evening briefings, species identification support, and daily tally sessions. Birdwatching takes lots of patience so if you are not interested in birds this will not suite you.

How physically demanding is the tour?
Mostly easy walking with some moderate terrain. You’ll spend time in 4WD vehicles travelling between sites. Closed footwear is essential for safety.

What if weather affects access? The majority of the tour uses dirt roads to access birds and waterholes, which is conditional on dry roads and no flooding. If weather prevents access, alternative sites will be provided. Your guide makes real-time decisions based on current conditions and water levels.
